What's New ***************** Version 3.0.3489 of the PC Printer Discovery plug-in for HP Web Jetadmin 8.1 includes the following new functionality: 1) IP Range is now the default discovery method when selecting to perform a discovery, thus improving performance by not always having to generate a domain list when one is not required. 2) Discoveries are now significantly faster in duration due to changes in the amount of time spent on workstations trying to determine whether a printer is attached. 3) PC connected printers can be added to groups to improve organization and management. 4) IP ranges used for discovering network-connected printers in HP Web Jetadmin can be imported for use in discovering PC connected prinetrs. ******************** III. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ************************* The HP PC Printer Discovery plug-in can be installed into HP Web Jetadmin 8.1 running under Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista. Microsoft .NET 1.1 must be installed on the HP Web Jetadmin machine where the PC Printer Discovery plug-in is installed. *********************** V. Supported Printers *********************** The HP PC Printer Discovery plug-in supports all plug and play compatible HP or non-HP printers directly connected to a client machine that meets the following criteria: · Microsoft Windows 98 SE, 2000, or XP operating system. · WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) is enabled. WMI is enabled by default for newer (Windows 2000 on) versions of Windows and is used by many Microsoft utilities to perform administration tasks. Administrator rights are required on the client machines in order to successfully discover printers directly connected to those clients. ************** VI. Q & A ************** 1) Question: Why does the HP PC Printer Discovery plug-in display several printers connected to LPT1 when there is physically only one printer attached? Answer: Any printer under the Windows Printers folder that is defined as using a local port such as LPT1 or USB will be displayed as a unique entry. However, the Model column will always match the plug-and-play model information obtained from the device, while the Windows Printer Name column will display the name that was given to the printer during the printer installation. 2) Question: Can I discovered direct-connected printers connected to a workstation running Microsoft Windows XP SP2? Answer: If Windows firewall is enabled, the workstation may have to be configured to allow PC Printer Discovery to make WMI calls in order to successfully discover printers. Microsoft Firewall blocks many ports and services including remote administration. The procedure for enabling remote WMI calls is outlined in a Microsoft MSDN technical note titled: "Connecting Through Windows Firewall" A simple test to determine if the procedure is required is to perform the following command at a remote client: netsh firewall set service RemoteAdmin enable Once enabled, Web Jetadmin PC Connected Printer Discovery should list any locally connected printers after a discovery. ***************************************************************** VII.
