HP Integrity Virtual Machines (Integrity VM) is a soft partitioning and virtualization technology, within the HP Virtual Server Environment, which enables you to create multiple virtual servers or machines with shared resourcing within a single HP Integrity server or nPartition.

This type of virtualization technology enables you to:

  • Maximize server utilization and resource flexibility
  • Consolidate enterprise-class servers
  • Rapidly deploy new environments
  • Improve cost of ownership
  • Isolate operating environments

HP Integrity VM provides:

  • Software fault and security isolation
  • Shared processor and I/O
  • Automatic dynamic resource allocation based on demand and entitlement
  • Dynamic memory migration

Each virtual machine hosts its own "guest" operating system instance, applications, and users.

HP Integrity Virtual Machines runs on any HP Integrity server (including blades), and supports the following guests (at this time):

»  HP-UX 11i v2 and v3
»  Windows Server 2003 (SP1 and SP2)
»  RHEL AP 4.4 , 4.5
»  SLES10 SP1

Integrity VM (starting with v3.5) provides Accelerated Virtual I/O (AVIO) which streamlines I/O processing for Integrity VM environments, for improved I/O performance and increased storage capacity. On Integrity VM v3.5, there are AVIO networking and storage drivers for HP-UX 11i v2 guests, and an AVIO networking driver for HP-UX 11i v3 guests.

Integrity VM v4.0 uniquely takes advantage of new HP-UX 11i v3 capabilities in the VM Host, such as the following:

  • Native multi-pathing solution avoids cost of expensive 3rd-party solutions
  • HP-UX 11i v3 mass storage stack simplifies administration of guest storage
  • Integration with HP-UX 11i v3 Dynamic nPartitions enables cell on-line addition of processors and memory to the VM Host “pool” of resources, reducing downtime and costs—while increasing flexibility
  • Accelerated Virtual I/O provides improved I/O performance specifically for HP-UX 11i v3 guest storage, as well as HP-UX guests overall

      …and provides these new features:

  • Larger virtual machines (8 virtual cores) extends Integrity VM use cases and reduces time-to-solution
  • Capping of specified CPU resources eases administration of resources between VMs
  • New hpvmsar tool assists performance analysis
