HP Process Resource Manager (HP PRM) is a resource management tool used to control the amount of resources that processes use during peak system load.

HP PRM can manage allocation of the following resources:

  • CPU
Ensures a minimum allocation of CPU; can also simultaneously cap CPU resource usage for each group in the configuration. (Starting with HP-UX 11i v3, per-group capping is available.)
  • Memory
Ensures a minimum allocation of private real memory; can also cap private memory usage. Allows you to allocate an exact amount of shared memory.
  • Disk bandwidth
Ensures a minimum allocation of disk bandwidth.

For information on PRM's role in Virtual Server Environments, visit the VSE web site.

For information about a tool that automates resource management, visit HP Integrity Essentials Global Workload Manager.

Secure Resource Partitions
The optional HP-UX feature Security Containment, available starting with HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23), provides “secure compartments,” which allow you to isolate processes and files. You can place one or more secure compartments in PRM groups to manage the allocation of CPU, real memory, and disk I/O bandwidth resources for your secure compartments.

Using these features together, you form Secure Resource Partitions (SRPs). Secure Resource Partitions allow stacking of multiple applications within a single HP-UX 11i operating system image, while ensuring security as well as granular allocation of resources. For example, the resource allocation can permit applications to run in as little as one percent of a processor core.

Security Containment is included with the HP-UX 11i Foundation Operating Environment. HP Process Resource Manager is included with the HP-UX 11i Enterprise Operating Environment.

HP-UX 11i Processor Sets
PRM supports HP-UX 11i Processor Sets. For background information on processor sets, see the Processor Sets Product Note and the technical white paper HP-UX Processor Sets.

  • For HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23) and later, the processor sets feature is included in the operating system.
