HP is pleased to announce the latest release of HP-UX 11i v2 Operating Environment Update Release (OEUR). This latest update offers important new features for both users of HP 9000 (PA-RISC-based) systems and Integrity (Itanium 2®-based) systems.

The HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 OEUR is available to support customers by request only. Please use the following information to decide whether this release is right for you.

This update to HP-UX 11i v2 is known by one of these names.

Name Usage
HP-UX 11i version 2 May 2005 update Standard name and DVD labels
HP-UX 11.23 VUF name

The HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 update supports both HP 9000 servers and Integrity servers. Therefore, customers with both PA-RISC and Itanium HP enterprise servers can use this update on both.

The HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 update adds important new functionality. The most significant new functionality is:
  • HP-UX 11i Virtual Partitions (vPars) for the Integrity server family
  • HP-UX 11i v2 vPars for the HP 9000 server family
If you need detailed information on the changes in the May 2005 HP-UX 11i v2 Operating Environment, please consult the HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 Release Notes.

HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 is supported on all current HP Integrity servers. The following HP 9000 PA-RISC servers are fully supported:
  • A-Class/rp2400 series except A180 and A180C, which had 32-bit processors
  • L-Class/rp5400 series
  • rp3400 series
  • rp4400 series
  • All N-Class/rp7400 series
  • All rp8400 series
  • All HP 9000 Superdome
Legacy HP 9000 server product families, including D, K, R, T and V-Class are not supported on HP-UX 11i v2. HP 9000 workstation product families, including B, C, and J-Class are also not supported on HP-UX 11i v2. However, support for the workstation products continues on HP-UX 11i v1.

HP's enterprise computing business carefully planned the transition to HP Itanium 2®?-based systems and places a premium on customer and partner investment protection. HP-UX 11i v2 maintains compatibility between HP 9000 and Integrity servers in the following ways:
  • Common "look and feel" for HP-UX 11i on both HP 9000 and Integrity servers
  • Source code compatibility
  • Data compatibility (identical data formats)
  • Binary compatibility (the Aries dynamic code translation technology, a standard integrated component of every copy of HP-UX 11i for Integrity, executes HP 9000 programs on Integrity without recompiling or relinking)
With this update of HP-UX 11i v2 for both the HP 9000 and Integrity server families, HP-UX 11i v2 continues as the transition bridge between the PA-RISC architecture and the Itanium architecture. It provides a smooth transition path for HP-UX customers and partners onto the next-generation Itanium architecture.

Please note that upgrading to HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 is required for the installation of vPars. Your system must have an HP-UX 11i v2 Operating Environment from September 2004 or later to install the latest software patches and updates for HP-UX 11i v2. If you are interested in receiving this update, please contact your HP Support Contract Administrator.

C. HP-UX 11i VPars

HP-UX 11i v2 Virtual Partitions (vPars) version A.04.01 software will be released concurrently with the May 2005 HP-UX 11i v2 Operating Environment Update Release (B.11.23 OEUR), although vPars will be distributed on a separate DVD, which needs to be ordered through a separate release. HP-UX 11i v2 vPars only runs with this HP-UX version.

HP-UX 11i v2 vPars is software that partitions a physical server into multiple virtual servers, each with their own operating system, and CPU, memory and I/O resources. By using HP-UX 11i v2 vPars, customers can utilize unused server capacity, increasing overall server utilization, and increase flexibility of those resources (utilizing vPars' dynamic CPU migration).

HP-UX 11i v2 vPars is planned to support the following servers: Superdome (on HP Integrity and HP 9000 servers), rx8620, rp8400/rp8420, rx7620, rp7420/rp7410/rp7405.

Customers may choose to use HP-UX 11i v2 vPars if:
  1. they are upgrading their HP9000 servers with HP-UX 11i v1 to HP-UX 11i v2 (with the HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 update), and wish to continue to use vPars on HP-UX 11i v2. (If the vPars software is under an HP upgrade support contract, this would be covered by that contract.)
  2. they are purchasing a new HP Integrity server running the HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 update, and would like to purchase HP-UX 11i v2 vPars on that server.
