HP-UX 11i processor sets integrate with other HP software to manage processor resources among multiple workloads, users and departments within an enterprise

Organizations have varying workloads depending on time of day, time of month or time of year. In complex computing environments, HP-UX 11i Processor Sets (PSETS) provide an outstanding mechanism for efficient processor resource management. HP-UX 11i Processor Sets allow workload processor allocations to be dynamically changed as needed without requiring planning for worst-case resource need of every workload.

Shared efficiency
HP-UX 11i Processor Sets permit consolidation of multiple independent applications on a single large server—which can be shared among multiple departments, rather than each department having its own server. Processor sets can be applied to batch processing workloads, where a workload is assigned a processor set based on its resource needs, and the configuration is changed to meet the needs of the next workload as the first completes. HP-UX 11i Processor Sets support dynamic run-time configuration, enabling a processor to be reassigned from one processor set to another. The administrator can allocate system processors and memory to a specific application. This isolation provides even greater control and predictability of application performance. The departments that used to have their own servers are thus guaranteed better performance, and the IT department is able to realize greater operational efficiency and server consolidation cost effectiveness.

Processor sets/PRM and Oracle database resource manager
Oracle Database Resource Manager and HP PRM can now be integrated using PRM PSET groups. The administrator can create a PRM PSET to allocate CPU and memory resources to the database instance and then use the Oracle Database Resource Manager for the finest granularity of control over the database and the users within the database.

Easy implementation and access
The HP-UX 11i Processor Sets implementation has a very flexible ownership and access permissions model, avoiding the need to rely completely on the system administrator to control the system processor set configuration or to assign workloads to different processor sets. Included APIs automatically manage the processor sets.

HP-UX 11i Processor Sets are only available on HP-UX 11i and are free of charge. Please visit www.software.hp.com September 20th to download a copy—free of charge.
