Flexible capacity:  reaching a whole new level

HP-UX 11i v3 solves today’s business problems with flexible capacity for tomorrow’s most demanding workloads and capacity for even exploding requirements for data.  That lets you spend time on your business, unhindered by technical limitations in your IT environment.

HP-UX 11i v3 enables:

  • Up to 8 virtual CPUs with Integrity Virtual Machines 4.0, integrated with native multi-pathing, mass storage stack and Dynamic nPartitions
  • Ignite-UX support for managing larger I/O configurations
  • Hardware threads limit increased to 256
  • Maximum number of processes increased to 60,000
  • Host name and user login name length increased to 255
  • Base system page size increased to 64 KB
  • Simultaneous group membership expanded from 20 to 65,536
  • Maximum number of LUNs increased to 16,384, LUN paths to 65,536, with other related increases
  • VxFS file system size to 50 TB with version 5.0
  • 100 million zettabytes of storage, while simplifying its management with next-generation mass storage stack. (That’s zettabytes – ZB – with 21 zeros!)
  • Dynamic addition of memory and processors, supporting capacity growth without interruption.
  • Dynamic movement of memory across HP Virtual Partitions for flexible reallocation to needy workloads.

Secured availability: extending mainframe-class availability

Key HP-UX 11i v3 enhancements reduce planned downtime, through the addition of:

  • Dynamic nPartitions eliminating downtime during reconfiguration of nPartitions on cell-based HP 9000 and Integrity servers. Dynamic nPars is integrated with HP Serviceguard
  • Online product updates and rehosting with Dynamic Root Disk
  • HP-UX Swap-off—the ability to remove a boot device with no downtime
  • PCI online deletion and error recovery
  • Hot-swap memory, processors, and I/O cards.
  • Online patching of HP-UX software with Dynamic Root Disk.

Version 3 supports the same comprehensive, integrated security available to HP-UX 11i v2 customers.

Simplified management: more automation

The more the operating system can do for itself, the more time your staff has to develop your competitive IT advantage. HP-UX 11i v3 delivers self-healing and management simplification:

  • Mass storage stack auto-detection and configuration of SAN devices and self-healing of failed I/O paths and devices
  • Up to 10% energy cost savings with Update 3, when processors are idling
  • Automated optimization with Locality-Optimized Resource Alignment, improving SAP performance 10-25% on cell-based servers, continually aligning applications, cores, and memory to minimize latency
  • Tune-N-Tools optimization for Oracle, SAP, and similar applications with a script optimizing 29 tunable parameters across the range of Integrity servers for up to 50% performance improvement versus untuned systems
  • Invisible tuning with more auto-tuning of kernel
  • Streamlined “single pane of glass” with HP-UX System Management Homepage
  • A new release of HP SIM 5.1, which now supports warranty information for systems and devices, simplifying maintenance

New HP-UX 11i management capability available for v3 and v2 increases availability and simplifies management with Software Assistant (SWA).  SWA simplifies patch and security bulletin management and patch deployment. SWA eases compliance with security regulations such as Sarbanes Oxley, as well. SWA combines the capabilities of Security Patch Check and HP IT Resource Center Patch Assessment utilities.

Turbocharged balanced performance

HP-UX 11i v3 delivers up to 30% faster operating system performance on average than HP-UX 11i v2.  That’s saying a lot, when you count the world records HP-UX 11i v2 set in key industry benchmarks

The thousands of available HP-UX 11i applications just work on v3, with no need for recompilation or modification to take advantage of the performance increase.   HP-UX’s strong binary compatibility provides the investment protection that customers are seeking.

HP-UX 11i v3 currently holds leadership in industry benchmarks that test typical UNIX workloads including data warehousing, enterprise resource planning, Java applications, and online transaction processing. HP-UX 11i v3 results have topped our own v2 leadership results where we’ve run benchmarks – see the winning numbers in the performance briefs listed at the right.

HP-UX 11i v3 Update 3 puts optimized, balanced performance in the hands of users with push-button ease. Run Tune-N-Tools and LORA if Oracle, SAP, and similar applications run your business for up to 50% and 25% performance increase respectively, compared to without their tuning.

Running Java applications? HP-UX 11i has already delivered out-of-the-box tuning for Java applications with Java OOB shipping with HP-UX 11i v3 Base OE. Want more interaction? HPjconfig and HPjmeter enable you to tune by hand as much as your tuning skills and time permit.

Packaging: HP-UX 11i v3 operating environments (OEs)

Beginning with the March 2008 Update 2 release, HP introduced new operating environments for Version 3 of HP-UX 11i. These new operating environments (OEs) provide a richer set of products and improved choices over the original set of HP-UX 11i OEs. Customers can now obtain the OEs' integration, testing, and ease of deployment, covering a powerful set of software designed to provide business-critical virtualization.

The chart below indicates the software components of the four new HP-UX 11i v3 Operating Environments (OEs).

"HP-UX 11i v3 provides a computing environment that has reliability, availability, security and manageability — all of them key requirements for running mission-critical workloads. Importantly, as a product that has been engineered and refined over two decades, HP-UX 11i supports a number of features that simplify and automate operations, which in turn reduces planned and unplanned downtime — and addresses operational costs."
