HP Integrity Superdome Server

hp 9000 Superdome - right facing view
The HP Integrity Superdome Server scales up to 64 CPUs, 128 cores, 8 cells, 256 threads, 2 TB memory. It powers your most demanding workloads…

But, what if, on average, it’s 50% utilized?

Customers can reduce processor power costs with HP-UX 11i v3. Green Idle Processors provide up to 10% power savings. Green Active Processors can save up to 8% power with less than 1% performance degradation for active workloads, based on HP lab testing. Customers can realize savings over 4% of total processor power, or about $1.5-2 K annually.
  • Power for $38,525.76 per year.
Since approximately 70% of the system’s power is needed from the cores, we can do the following calculation for this Superdome:
  • $38,525.76 *70% (processors’ part) = $26,968
If we assume 50% of the cores ($13,484) are in average idle and the other active, we have the following savings:
  • 10% savings for idle cores is $1,348 annual savings
  • 8% savings for active cores is $1,079 annual savings
  • Total savings in power per year may be up to $2,427
Even further power savings is possible by utilizing HP-UX 11i v3 capabilities: Green Idle Cell and Green Idle I/O. With these capabilities customers can achieve greater power efficiency by powering off unused cell boards and PCI I/O devices.
